Become an Ombudsman, Advocating for Southeast Texas Seniors
The Area Agency on Aging of Southeast Texas oversees the Ombudsman Program for Orange, Hardin and Jefferson counties. The Agency is in need of dedicated, caring volunteers willing to provide Ombudsman services in an assigned facility. Prospective Ombudsmen participate in 32 hours of initial certification training which includes classroom training, internship, and self study. Upon completion, volunteers are certified through the State of Texas and given assignment to a nursing facility where they are asked to visit a minimum of 2 hours weekly. Volunteers must be at least 18 years of age. While the main responsibility is to advocate for a resident’s rights and quality care, a good deal of time is spent simply visiting. That’s a rewarding aspect of the job because according to the Texas Department of Aging and Disability Services, approximately 60% of nursing home residents in Texas have no immediate relatives or regular visitors. An Ombudsman can be a welcome, friendly sight for  seniors.
If you are interested in finding out more about volunteering or have questions about the program, please call 1-800-252-2412. You can make a difference in the lives of so many here in your community. Become a volunteer ombudsman
